Which Abloy Models This Applies To

Abloy builds cylinders that do not work like standard pin-tumbler locks. Their rotating disc system uses a completely different mechanism, which means rekeying requires specialized disc detainers, springs, and key gauges that your average hardware store does not carry.

We regularly rekey three Abloy lines in Florida homes and businesses:

• Abloy Classic - The original disc system, still common in older commercial buildings around Miami-Dade and Tampa. Keyway has a distinctive rectangular profile. Rekeying requires the full Classic disc set and matching sidebar components.
• Abloy Protec - Introduced the rotating disc with a moving element in the key. Cylinders are stamped “Protec” near the face. These need the Protec-specific pinning kit; Classic tools will not fit.
• Abloy Protec2 - Current flagship with the rotating disc and a hardened steel ring for drill resistance. Key has a distinctive dimple pattern on both edges. Rekeying demands the Protec2 disc assortment and the newer sidebar springs, which differ in tension from the original Protec.

Here is the compatibility gotcha we see constantly: a Protec cylinder in a housing marked “Abloy” looks identical to a Protec2 from the outside. The difference is inside - the disc diameter and sidebar groove spacing changed by 0.4 millimeters. We measure before we order anything. For aftermarket versus OEM, Abloy’s own discs and springs are hardened specifically for Florida’s humidity cycles; some aftermarket kits use standard steel that surface-rusts inside the cylinder after two or three years near the coast. Signs Your Abloy Lock Rekeying Is Failing

• The key turns but does not retract the bolt. This usually means the sidebar is not engaging properly because disc springs have weakened or a disc has cracked. The lock feels functional, but the security mechanism is not transferring force to the bolt.
• The key inserts roughly or hangs up at certain angles. Dirt and grit from Florida’s pollen seasons work into the disc channels. Unlike pin tumblers, Abloy discs ride in precise grooves; even fine sand from a beach house can score the disc edges enough to cause binding.
• A previously working key now stops at the same depth every time. One disc has rotated out of position or a spring has broken, creating a hard stop. This is common after temperature swings in unconditioned garages, where metal expands and contracts more aggressively.
• The lock was rekeyed recently and now malfunctions. An inexperienced technician may have mixed Protec and Protec2 discs, used incorrect spring tension, or failed to lubricate with Abloy’s specified medium. The lock worked for a week, then failed.
• You have multiple Abloy locks and they no longer share a key. Someone rekeyed one cylinder with a different keyway series or used non-matching disc combinations. True keying alike across Abloy lines requires identical disc sets and precise sidebar matching.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check two things yourself: whether the keyway is obstructed with visible debris, and whether the key itself is bent or worn. A flashlight and a gentle brush are fine. Beyond that, Abloy rekeying is not a DIY project.

The disc detainer mechanism contains up to eleven discs under spring pressure, each positioned to thousandths of an inch. Disassembly without the correct Abloy key gauge and disc holder sends springs across the room and mixes the disc order irreversibly. We have been called to jobs where a homeowner opened the cylinder on a workbench and spent three hours trying to sort discs by feel. The lock usually ends up replaced instead of rekeyed, which costs more than calling us first.
