Mul-T-Lock Lock Rekeying Nationwide

Mul-T-Lock Lock Rekeying: The Florida Owner’s Guide

Mul-T-Lock lock rekeying in Florida typically runs $120-$220 for residential cylinders and $180-$320 for commercial high-security setups, with same-day service available across our service area. We stock Mul-T-Lock Interactive+, Classic, and MT5+ keyway cylinders on every truck, so most rekeys are finished in under an hour on the first visit. Most Florida owners realize they need this service after a move, a lost key, or a tenant change - sometimes years after the original installation when the key starts sticking or the cylinder feels gritty in our humid climate.

Which Mul-T-Lock Models This Applies To

Mul-T-Lock builds cylinders across three main series, and each rekeys differently. The Classic line uses the original pin-tumbler system with the familiar dimple key. Interactive+ adds a telescoping pin that makes unauthorized duplication nearly impossible without the key card. MT5+ layers in a double-alpha spring mechanism and magnetic pin, which is why you’ll pay more for rekeying but get a key that practically can’t be copied by a walk-in locksmith.

To identify what you have, check the face of the cylinder for the series name stamped near the keyway, or look at your key card - the plastic card with the key code that came with your lock. No card? We can decode the cylinder on-site, though it adds 15-20 minutes to the call.

We use OEM Mul-T-Lock pinning kits for all rekeys. Aftermarket pinning exists but we’ve seen mixed results with third-party drivers in Florida’s salt air, particularly near the coast. The OEM springs hold their tension longer. We also rekey Schlage, Kwikset, and Medeco cylinders if you’re matching a new Mul-T-Lock to an existing master key system.

Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of Florida is an independent service provider - not affiliated with Mul-T-Lock - and we service all Mul-T-Lock products per the manufacturer’s specifications.

Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Lock Rekeying Is Failing

  • The key sticks or requires jiggling. In Florida’s humidity, brass pins oxidize slowly. A key that used to glide now catches on the third or fourth pin. Rekeying replaces the worn pin stack and polishes the chamber walls - lubricant alone quits working after a few weeks.
  • You’ve lost track of who has copies. This is the most common reason we rekey Mul-T-Lock cylinders. The Interactive+ and MT5+ systems require the key card for duplication, but older Classic keys could have been copied at any hardware store years ago. Rekeying resets the combination so every old key becomes a paperweight.
  • The cylinder turns but the bolt doesn’t retract fully. Sometimes this is a tailpiece issue, but often the cam inside the cylinder has worn unevenly after years of torque. During rekeying, we inspect the cam and tailpiece assembly - if they’re scored, we replace them before the new pins go in.
  • You’re rekeying after a break-in attempt. Even if the lock held, the stress of picking or bumping can deform driver pins. We pull the cylinder apart and check for mushrooming or compression. A rekey after an attempted entry isn’t paranoia - it’s maintenance that most people skip.
  • The key works in summer but not in winter. Metal expands and contracts, but in Florida the bigger issue is humidity swelling wooden doors and shifting strike alignment. If the cylinder itself is sound, rekeying may not fix this - but we’ll tell you that on the phone before we drive out. We quote it flat before we roll, and we stand behind it when we’re done.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Residential Mul-T-Lock rekey (single cylinder) $120-$180 Disassembly, new OEM pins, 2 keys, key card registration
Residential Mul-T-Lock rekey (double cylinder / deadbolt + knob) $180-$260 Both cylinders keyed alike, 4 keys, key card
Commercial Mul-T-Lock Interactive+ / MT5+ rekey $220-$320 High-security pinning, key card, master keying if needed
After-hours / emergency rekey Add $50-$75 Same service, nights/weekends/holidays

The range depends on cylinder complexity and whether we need to decode a lost key card. Master keying adds time but not mystery - we quote the full price before the truck moves. Every rekey carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise: backed in writing, no arguing, no extra paperwork. Seniors and veterans receive a permanent 5% discount. If your repair totals over $250, ask about our $50 standing discount.

DIY or Call Us?

Mul-T-Lock cylinders aren’t dangerous to remove - no springs under tension, no electrical hazard. If you’re mechanically inclined, you can unscrew the cylinder yourself and bring it to us. What goes wrong: losing the tiny top pins when the plug slides out, installing the new pins upside-down, or scratching the precision-milled chambers with the wrong tools. One slip and you’ve turned a $150 rekey into a $400 cylinder replacement.

We don’t recommend buying pinning kits online. The tolerances in a Mul-T-Lock Interactive+ cylinder are tighter than standard Schlage or Kwikset - 0.003-inch variance can mean the difference between a smooth turn and a key that hangs up. We’ve also seen counterfeit “OEM” pins sold on auction sites that corrode within a year in Florida’s coastal air.

For most owners, the time and risk aren’t worth the savings. We stock every pin size on the truck, register your new key code with Mul-T-Lock’s system, and test the cylinder fifty cycles before we leave. Call (844) 956-4715 for a flat quote - estimates are free, and a live person answers.
